Some Weed Management Tips for Bonsai
- Be vigilant about pulling weeds as soon as you see them. Set aside an afternoon once a week to go over each plant and pluck out offending material.
- Always weed a plant before you fertilize. Otherwise, you're cultivating weeds.
- When you weed, be sure to remove the entire plant, including undeground runner, root system and rhizome. A pair of tweezers can be helpful in gripping small or slippery weeds
- Replace the upper inch or so of soil on a regular basis, usually in fall and spring, whether or not you transplant the entire tree. This will give you an opportunity to remove some compacted soil, fertilizer and weed-infested soil.
