Water is a critical component of living systems. It is used by the plant to deliver soluble nutrients throughout the tree using a vascular system. The tree also uses water in its metabolism and growth, and as it releases moisture into the air during respiration and transpiration from the leaves.

Meeting a bonsai's watering requirements is critical to success as a bonsai grower. Learning to water is as important as knowing How to water.
