Spittlebug on Japanese White Pine

Spitbugs or Spittlebugs

Spitbugs or spittlebugs, as they are sometimes known, are a rather uncommon bonsai pest, but one that is easy to recognize and control.

If you find a branch on your bonsai has been overtaken by a ball of clear, foaming mucus, you may have identified a spitbug. Flushing it out of the foliage of your tree with a jet of water is an effective means of control. Spittlebugs seem to prefer tall dewy grasses and may work their way from there onto your bonsai in spring. If allowed to persist, a spittlebug infestation can result in deformed foliage.
