Spider Mites are a common bonsai pest, nearly invisible to the naked eye. They produce fine silk webs that are very difficult to see. They will usually be found on the underside of leaves, it is their larvae that do the most damage, sucking the juices from the underside of the leaves

Tests for spider mite infestation
- Tap the branch over a sheet of white paper and then rub any specks with a fingertip to see if they smear red.
- Mist the branches with a fine sprayer to look for very fine webs

Control of Spider Mites
- Wash away mites with a powerful jet of water
- Horticultural oil or Insecticidal soap (Pyrethrin)
- Miticide like Diazinon and Malathion
