Slugs and Snails

From BonsaiWIKI

Anywhere you have lush plant growth and pleasant temperatures, there are bound to be snails and slugs.

Some growers make midnight runs into their garden with a flashlight to handpick the offending pests. Others poison them with a product like Cory's Slug & Snail Death.

bonsaiTALK Forum member Jay in Orange County, NY has an interesting way of dealing with the problem:

"Now as to the slug problem.... I have it fairly well under control... both with my trees and with my garden plants. I clean out old cat food cans, or tuna fish cans.... fill them 1/2 to 3/4 with cheap beer (Why waste the good stuff) and place it out in the evening. It is amazing one can of beer will fill 3 to 4 cat cans and each can can catch sometimes 50 slugs if you got a bad problem. The slugs love the beer but drown in it. The can can stay out in the yard for two or maybe three days before you need to wash it and replace the beer. Replace the beer sooner if the can is full of slugs or you gets heavy rain. I know they sell slug traps, I've bought one. It uses beer also but is not as good as the cans and a lot more money.... Give it a try!"
