Pruning
From BonsaiWIKI
Pruning is the process of removing portions of the foliage, twigs and branches, or roots that make up a tree or shrub used for bonsai.
Pruning can be accomplished with bonsai shears or special tools like concave cutters. Pruning can be used to make a tree conform to a bonsai artist's design plan, or it can be intended to help meet the tree's horticultural needs, for ventilation and light. Pruning can help promote backbudding. Pruning can help to rejuvenate a tree, in particular the periodic pruning of the root system when trees are repotted creates a more efficient network of feeder roots.
