Pine

Pines are members of the genus Pinus, and are evergreen conifers with long needles. Pines have a resinous sap, and bear cones.

The most popular pines for bonsai are the Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) and the Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora). North American natives, including Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida), Scrub Pine (Pinus virginiana) and Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata) are also used. Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), Mugo Pine (Pinus mugo) and European Black Pine (Pinus nigra) are European favourites.
