Perlite

From BonsaiWIKI

Perlite is a lightweight, volcanic glass that has been expanded through heat to create a white, porous structure. Perlite is often used as a component of soils designed for seedlings and cuttings. As a component of bonsai soil, it is a poor choice because it is so light that it nearly floats out of the pot when watered. Pumice is a more common choice for bonsai applications.

Perlite's light weight can come in handy when the weight of large containers or shipping charges are a concern.
