Lichen are a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga (algae). Lichens may grow on trees, rocks and soil. Their relationship with the substrate is not
parasitic: Lichens may absorb certain minerals but they are self sustaining. Lichens can become dormant to survive periods of drought and dehydration. They are, however, rather sensitive to pollution.
