From BonsaiWIKI

Haydite is a non-toxic, odorless, 100% inert, and completely inorganic, ceramic lightweight aggregate. It is prepared by expanding select minerals in a rotary kiln at temperatures over 1000'C. Haydite improves soil structure by promoting moisture retention, aeration, and free drainage.
