Gopher
From BonsaiWIKI
Gophers and moles are common pests in the growing grounds were future bonsai are developed. Short of eradicating the pests after they arrive, you can take some preventive measures by laying down some hardware cloth or chicken wire at the bottom of your planting holes. It may not prevent the trees' roots from being nibbled, but it will keep the major portion of the root system alive.
Once the area is infested, they can only be removed from their burrows with with traps or poison, or smoked or drowned out.
