Field soil

From BonsaiWIKI

Field soil is the original soil in which a collected or field grown bonsai was planted. Because field soil often contains clay or fine organic matter, it does not drain well in the confines of a bonsai container it is important that it be removed so that it does not result in poor drainage and root rot.

With deciduous trees, it is usually possible to remove all the field soil at the first transplant. However, this can be risky for conifers, so it may take a couple of transplantings to remove all the field soil from a pine.
