Elm is a deciduous tree with alternate branching and simple, serrated leaves. Together with maple, elm is one of the most popular trees grown for bonsai because of its twiggy character, interesting bark and adaptability to life in a bonsai container.

The most popular species of elm grown for bonsai is the Chinese Elm. There are several varieties, even including a Cork Bark Elm and variegated elm.
