Decomposed Granite

From BonsaiWIKI

Decomposed granite or DG as it is sometimes known is dug from the desert around the areas where California Juniper is collected. It resembles shale, but is harder and less water absorbent. Small flakes of it accumulate from the erosion of hard granite rock.

The material can vary in hardness. Some have reported problems with it turning into a sledge in the bottom of a bonsai container after a year or two, leading to drainage problems.
