A companion planting is a plant or weed that is used in the formal display of bonsai to depict the season and provide a sense of scale for the main planting. The companion planting may be a kusamono or smaller bonsai. If an evergreen is used as the primary tree, a companion bonsai would be deciduous, flowering or fruiting bonsai to help illustrate a seasonal display.
