Scientific Name: Conocarpus erectus

Also known as 'False Mangrove', the Buttonwood was named for its hard wood, which in the past was used to make buttons. Conocarpus erectus is an evergreen, Florida native. The Buttonwood appears quite similar to the Mangrove; the only noticable difference is that the leaves of the Buttonwood are alternating. The leaves are generally 2-8" in size, but can be trained to be much smaller. Being a Florida native, Buttonwoods will thrive in a warmer climate.

NOTE: Trees of the genus Platanus including the American Sycamore are also commonly known as Buttonwood Trees or Plane Trees. Sycamore is not commonly used in bonsai because of its rather large leaves and coarse branching. Thee beginning of the New York Stock Exchange was an agreement known as the "Buttonwood Agreement", signed under a buttonwood tree growing in New York City - certainly not a Conocarpus.
