Boxwood
- Scientific Name: Buxus
- Also called simply Box, Boxwood is the common name for a genus of broadleaf evergreen plants including cultivars of B. microphylla, including var. japonica, var. koreana and B. sempervirens, favored for topiary and hedges. A cultivar of var. japonica called Kingsville Boxwood is a variety favored for shohin bonsai due to its slow growth and tiny leaves. Boxwood has very hard wood and is favored for carving chessmen and other miniatures. Pruning large limbs is best done with a saw for this reason. Boxwood does best with some protection from summer sun. Boxwoods have very fibrous root systems that adapt well to container culture. Difficult to wire, box responds well to clip-and-grow development. Protect from frost.
