Overview
Beech are deciduous, broadleaf trees that tend to hold onto their leaves long after they have turned. Beech are among the last trees to leaf out, often well into spring, which may cause the grower some concern.
Varieties
Two main species of Beech are used for bonsai. The Japanese Beech (Fagus crenata) and the European Beech (Fagus sylvatica).
In Japanese, the Beech is known as BUNA and a particularly well known varieties, Fuji Beech, which is a white-barked tree.
Cultivation
From the standpoint of bonsai cultivation, beech can be considered understory trees and they should be protected from too much direct sun and wind in the warmer months, and care should be taken not to allow them to dry out. They can be treated much like Birch and Hornbeam
Complete defoliation is not recommended because the trees can't be considered strong, even when healthy. Individual experience may dictate otherwise.
