Backbud
From BonsaiWIKI
Backbudding is budding that occurs on the trunk or branches that occurs from dormant buds behind the growing apex.
Bonsai growers often encourage backbudding to improve the ramification of branches or to develop new branches on the trunk where none exist.
As the tissues that make up trunk or branches lignify, they often lose the ability to backbud easily. However, some species of plants, most notably shrubs and shrub-like trees have the ability to bud easily from old wood.
