Akadama

From BonsaiWIKI

Akadama Tsuchi, literally "Red Ball Earth" is a type of clay imported from Japan for use as a bonsai soil. It offers properties of moisture retention and drainage that make it ideal as a soil component.

Akadama is available in various grades or sizes. It is also available fired or unfired. The unfired akadama is softer, has more moisture retaining capability but breaks down faster. Fired akadama has the texture of Turface and is good for use with conifers, offering superior drainage and longevity.
